EQUITISM: An “Egalitarian” Provision that Turned Out to be INequitable.

EQUITISM: An “Egalitarian” Provision that Turned Out to be INequitable.

Dear Reader,

In some earlier statements and drafts on our proposal for ‘Equitist Political-ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY, we, and the Equitist Advocacy group, held that the ‘Citizen Stewards’ [who are called so because they are Stewards of Social Property] of, competing, ‘Citizen Stewardship Equity’ socialized producers’ cooperatives, should receive – differing -- hourly compensation based upon the market rate for their labor skills, but should all receive an equal share of the net operating surplus of their Stewardship enterprise.

However, we soon realized – as our envisioning of an ‘‘‘Equitist’’’ society/predominant ‘‘‘social relation of [societal self-re-]production’’’ became more concrete, that this “egalitarian” provision would lead to highly INequitable consequences, if implemented.

It would do so in the cases where the Citizen-Steward Members of a Stewardship cooperative voted to allow flexibility, to some members, to work fewer hours, e.g., fewer hours per month – for example, to work half-time, or some other fraction of full-time; a desirable kind of work-life flexibility – while many of the rest of the Steward Members of that cooperative continued to work, e.g., full time.

It would not be fair for Steward Members investing less of their monthly life-time in the cooperative to gain the same share of the cooperative’s net operating surplus as Members who invested more of their monthly life-time in that cooperative, especially given that the causal contribution to that surplus would likely be approximately proportionate to the hours worked by each contributing Steward Member.

This realization led to a reformulation of the surplus-sharing provisions of the ‘constitutional statutes’ – of the ‘Amendatory Annex’1 -- in later presentations of our ‘‘‘Equitist’’’ proposal.

The new, more equitable formula for the monthly surplus share of each Steward Member of such a cooperative therefore became –

( ((Number of hrs. worked by Steward x in month m) ÷ (aggregate hrs. worked by all Stewards in month m)) *

(net operating surplus $s for month m) ).

I want it to be known publicly – to the “public” of this blog – that I supported this revised provision during the deliberations regarding the ‘‘‘Equitist’’’ texts at issue for this revision.
