Dear Reader,

 

On page 336 of his very intriguing book, entitled The Populist Moment: The End of Right vs. Left, Alain de Benoist lays out his triadic, systematic-dialectical, categorial progression of three major tenets, principles and categories of democratic cultures, perhaps most profoundly promoted by the 1789 French Revolution –

 

“A whole dialectic was…established between the two concepts [M.D.: of liberty versus equality].  Some authors, for example, made each of these two terms the means for preventing the other’s excesses.  Liberty would limit the tendency toward levelling implied by equality, while equality would limit an excess of liberty leading towards intolerable hierarchies.” 

 

“But from a different point of view, it is the slogan’s third term, fraternity, that appeared as a means of reconciling the other two, and secondarily of reconciling their respective defenders as well.  In other words, to fraternity was entrusted the means of conciliating, and at the same time transcending, equality and liberty.”

 

“This transcendence could be compared to a Hegelian Aufhebung, with fraternity playing the role of synthesis in relation to the thesis liberty and the antithesis equality.”
